<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">RubyPeople - Recently there have been a number of Ruby on Rails developer positions becoming available. But with so much opportunity around, it has proved rather difficult for employers to find the right people. So if you are a Ruby on Rails developer and job seeker, here are four pointers to help you along the way.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial;">1 – Make sure you can be Googled</span></h3>
<h3><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;">Time and time again, I find employers are looking for people who have made Open Source contributions and who are known in the Open Source community.</span></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">The stress is not so much in being known, but in being an active contributor to the Open Source community. It means a great deal to an employer when a candidate has a decent portfolio of open source contributions. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial;">2 – Have an Agent, but don’t rely on them 100% </span></h3>
<h3><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;">If you rely 100% on your Recruitment Agent, you’ll miss out on opportunities that are advertised directly by employers. Go along to user group meetings and network directly with fellow Rubyists and employers. </span></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">You’ll feel empowered as you’ll have more options than what your Agent can give you. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial;">3 – Aim to achieve a broader skill set in your next job</span></h3>
<h3><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;">When considering your next move think about what kind of job will develop your weaknesses. It is tempting to go for a job because it pays more, or it is more commutable, or because you like the people in the office. All this is great, but also ask yourself ‘where do I want to be in 5 years time?’ </span></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Perhaps some short-term sacrifices and learning new skills in your new job is what is needed to put you in a strong position for the future.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial;">4 – Show your enthusiasm for Ruby on Rails</span></h3>
<h3><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;">If you’re an Open Source enthusiast, you’re already showing you’re a free thinker. </span></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">Employers care about how you’ll affect the rest of their development team. The saying goes that for every negative person in a team it takes 6 positive people to counteract them. The difference between you and another candidate can come down to enthusiasm.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial;">All the best to you Rubyists out there!</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>
